Repeal
In May 2018 Ireland voted to repeal the Eighth Amendment to our constitution and allow access to abortion. The lead up to the Referendum was intense and bitter, with many fights between friends and families. I was inspired to create something to show my support for the Repeal the movement.
In Ireland the shame about our bodies runs so deep it can be difficult to see your vagina as clean. A pair of white cotton underwear represent innocence and purity. I used embroidery, a traditionally female craft, to sew REPEAL in red. It is a call to action, a battlecry of outrage that we had to demand autonomy over our own bodies. We would not surrender. For all the women raped, young girls forced to give birth in secret, the Magdalene Laundries, the sick and for the just wrong timing.
